Vitamin C

Vitamin C is known to many of us as the powerhouse secret for fighting the common cold. While it might not be the actual “cure”, it is in fact a powerhouse prevention for many other things.  It is a water soluble antioxidant which helps fight against in diseases such as atherosclerosis and cancer. Vitamin C helps to eliminate damaging oxidizing agents in living organisms. Immune system deficiencies such as, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, are just some of the conditions vitamin C protects us from. It has many more benefits to it and is the safest and most effective nutrients out there. Vitamin C can be found in many types of food and can be taken in supplement form as well.  Vitamin C helps repair all of the body’s tissues and for the formation of collagen, immune system, absorption of iron, wound healing and helps maintain cartilage and bone. While many of us may have concern about supplementation overdose, vitamin C is not stores within the body, but consuming too much of it can cause upset stomach and diarrhea.

One of the biggest topics researched towards vitamin C are its benefits towards our cardiovascular system. While we know that the build-up of plaque in our system is highly detrimental, studies are starting to prove that vitamin C might help to reduce the buildup. A British study was conducted to understand the effects of vitamin C supplements and the adhesion process of plaque on 40 healthy adults. The results of this study show that after 6 weeks the monocyte adhesion of plaque decreased by 37%.

Vitamin C correlates with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference measurements. Adults who are considered obese or overweight from the BMI standards have lower levels of vitamin C, where as individuals who had good BMI standards and were not over weight had higher levels of vitamin C. A study that was conducted with women found that women with higher vitamin C levels also had a higher level of fat-supressing hormone called adiponectin.  Regular exercise is very important in maintaining a healthy life style. Intense exercise can often produce damaging free radicals in our system. Fortunately, Vitamin C can help ease the free-radical damage that our bodies produce. Vitamin C can also help reduce muscle soreness and allow for better muscle function.
