Nothing says cozy than a delicious fresh glass of red wine to enjoy by the fire or around friends and family. Over the last few months I have been taking the time to try new and different brands and blends of red wines. Once September hits, I tend to change from white’s and rose’s and go straight to red wines. I won’t transition back to white until March/April, and thats only because I get really excited for spring and summer. I wanted to share with you some of my favourite red wine’s for fall and winter. With the COVID numbers increasing and most part’s of the world entering the second wave, chances are we will be bundled up inside again and need something to keep us warm and cozy.
1. Casillero Del Diablo
This medium bodied wine has been one of my favourites this year. Last Christmas I received a PR sample bottle from Casillero Del Diablo. I genuinely fell in love with this wine and every time Gavin and i have a date night in, this is our go-to bottle. It is dark plum colour and has hints of cherry, black current, vanilla and toasted oak. I love wine’s that have tints of cherry. It is a really delicious and savoury flavour to add to any wine.
2. Apothic Red
Sometimes, when I am in the mood, I love a bold blend. This Apothic Red is great for a relaxing fall dinner. Gavin and I decided to enjoy this wine over a warm bowl of ginger carrot soup one fall night and it was so delicious with this red wine. Again, this blend features black cherry, which is my favourite to any red wine.
3. Josh Red
Gavin discovered this delicious Josh wine. This California red is one of my favourites from that region. This blended wine includes flavours such as coffee, herbs, prune preserve and dark spices. In the mouth, it’s bold and juicy with supple tannins and added flavours of toasted almonds and hazelnuts on a long finish. We enjoyed this blend with Gavin’s homemade ribs. With the different spices from the ribs to the added savoury flavours of this red blend, they complimented each other very well.
4. Wayne Gretzky Oak Aged Red
There is nothing I love more than supporting local businesses. This wine is made in the Niagara region just 1 hour away from Toronto. We visit Niagara wine country a couple times a year. As COVID came in, we were scared to visit any wineries or go to the local wine shop. Luckily we were able to support our local wineries by ordering online and having them delivery to us for free! This medium body blend of Wayne Gretsky’s red is a blend of 44% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Syrah and 1% Cabernet Franc. To say it is bursting with flavour is an understatement.
5. Mezzomondo
I love a good Italian wine. This one is a great wine to share with friends and family or on a girls night. It is a light blend of with different notes of dried herbs, spice, dark fruit flavours with toast notes. This is my favourite wine to enjoy on a Friday night after a long week of work by the fire or binge watching my favourite show.
