The time has finally come where we are able to see acres and acres of beautiful sunflowers everywhere! I cannot express how much being around fields of flowers makes me! This past weekend we visited one of Ontario’s largest sunflower farms, Bogle Seeds farm, consisting of 75 acres! That’s a whole lot of sunflowers! As I may have mentioned in my other post I love marking my flower calendar every year where I map out the time of year each flower blooms. I love being able to enjoy and fresh flowers when they bloom and I always get an overwhelming burst of joy when I can be around it all.
Growing up sunflowers were all over my house. My mother used to be obsessed with them. Our kitchen used to be yellow and green with sunflowers everywhere. We had sunflower tablecloths, napkins, cutlery, and other decor. It was safe to say my mom used to be a little obsessed with sunflowers. She is probably the reason for my flower obsession!
Bogle Seed farm has been a family run farm for many years since the late 1800s. Six generations have been farming here and in 1970, they became the first to commercially grow sunflowers in Ontario. The entire farm is 250 acres where they are able to grow and harvest different kinds of crops throughout the year, but their main attraction are the sunflowers. The best times to see sunflowers at their peak bloom in Ontario are in late July and early August.
Sunflowers are usually tall flower plants that can grow to a height of 300 cm or more. As you can tell in my photos, these sunflowers were already quite tall. Did you know that when sunflowers begin to grow they tilt to face the sun and once they bloom they generally face east? But that’s not how they got their name “sunflower”. Instead, they received their name sunflower from the literal sense that they looked like a happy representation of the sun. This is why sunflowers are known for being “happy” flowers, making them the perfect gift to bring joy to someone.
