Tis the season for picking peonies! The flowers are blooming and mother nature makes the world around us a much more beautiful and colourful place. Every year I take out my calendar and map out when every flower will bloom and for how long they will bloom. I never want to miss it! Just like you may have seen in my cherry blossom post, those beautiful little buds don’t last a long time so we need to enjoy them while they are in bloom. I love travelling to different flower markets and farms to pick up fresh flowers and produce.
This year Gavin and I are making an avid effort to get outside and travel to different farms to pick our own flowers. It gives us an excuse to get outside more, spend more time together, and appreciate where the flowers came from. Peonies are one of my favourite flowers because they are so gorgeous! They can grow and bloom into huge flowers that can light up any room. I have been waiting all year to pick peonies. I wanted to make sure we went in prime time to pick the perfect bouquet.
This year we took a trip out to Milton, Ontario which is just a quick 45-minute drive outside of Toronto. We got a chance to visit Andrew’s Scenic Acres where you can pick your own locally grown flowers. I searched long and hard to find a farm that will allow you to pick your own flowers. I finally laid my hands on one! As you can tell from the pictures I was one quite happy lady! I was in my own element picking my own flowers for the first time!
If you have never picked your own flowers before, here are some tips to help you.
- Choose your colour palette – Getting loose in a field of flowers can make you want to pick on of everything. Make sure to choose the colours that you like fit your colour scheme in your home. It will make the colours of the flowers stand out more and make the room pop. I personally love pink, purple and white flowers and I knew these colours would look great in my dining room.
- Cut your stems long – I like to keep my stems long when I pick them because it allows me to arrange my flowers once I get home. Make sure to go right to the base if your flower stem and pick from there.
- Put them in water immediately – If you have a long ride home you want to make sure you bring a bucket of water to put your flowers in. If you don’t there is a higher chance of them starting to wilt. By putting them in water you will allow them to bloom and stay healthy longer.
- Shake out the bugs – Aunts, bees, and other insects are living within the buds of the flowers before you pick them. Make sure to shake them all so they don’t travel with you back home. This will prevent any further mess from happening.
