Hello Everyone! 🙂
I was feeling a little risky the other day in the kitchen and thought I would try and make a recipe with an ingredient I have never tried before. I wen out to the health food store and was walking up and down the isles until I found just the thing I was looking for (basically anything that caught my eye and gave the the ‘AHA’ feeling). So that’s when I found black rice. Yeah I know what your saying. Black rice… is that really a thing? I mean I know of white rice, brown rice, wild and even Jasmine rice. But never have I ever heard of or worked with black rice. So I decided to buy it and experiment with it. I knew it was healthy, because as I said, I was shopping at the health food store, but I wanted to understand the real health implications it had!
According to Dr. Axe, black rice has been eaten in regions of Asia for thousands of years; in fact for centuries it was reserved for only Chinese royalty. Not only is it the type of rice that is richest in powerful disease-fighting antioxidants, but it also contains dietary fiber, anti-inflammatory properties, and has the ability to help stop the development of diabetes, cancer, heart disease and even weight gain. That’s pretty darn cool if you ask me!
Black rice contains a lot of Antioxidants. It contains a deep purple colour which is actually indicative of high antioxidant properties. This is similar to other products such as blueberries, raspberries, and cranberries. Detoxing is huge now a days and you will be happy to know that black rice is VERY detoxifying for the body. Studies have shown that consuming black rice can help to detox the body and cleanse the liver of harmful toxic build-up thanks to the rice’s high antioxidant content.
Black rice is also a naturally gluten free-grain. Like other rice varieties, black rice naturally contains no gluten, the protein found in all wheat, rye, and barley products. It’s estimated that 1 in 7 people are sensitive to gluten- whether they are aware of it or not- but still test negative for Celiac Disease.
Did you know that according to Dr. Axe that in one-half cup serving of cooked black rice, or about ¼ cup uncooked, contains approximately:
- 160 calories
- 1.5 grams of fat
- 34 grams of carbohydrates
- 2 grams of fiber
- 5 grams of protein
- 4% DV for iron

I decided to make my rice with some sauteed veggies and I topped it with feta cheese, because I love feta cheese. It helps to add and flavour and the salt in the feta cheese helps to enhance the flavour of the vegetables and the rice which makes it the perfect add-on! I decided to not add in any poultry and strictly make it vegan, but all of you meat lovers out there can add in grilled chicken! Yum Yum Yum!
Alrightlyyyy lets get cooking and detoxing! 😀

As a vegan with tons of food allergies (like gluten) I always love finding new recipes to try. This one looks super yummy, and the photography is amazing! I’ll have to try this out sometime.
