The number one question I get asked at least once a week is how I keep my hair healthy. This was not an overnight process. I’m sure if you ask me or my hairdresser I am sure we will tell you it isn’t as healthy as it could be! Overall, I like to think I take good care of my hair and I am very strategic about my routine. I can’t tell you how much money I have wasted in my lifetime trying new hair products. Just to find the one that really worked! I’m not quite sure if I even found the exact formula thus far, but I am pretty darn close and really happy with the results.
Naturally, I have very curly hair. But after so many years of using heat and straightening it, it doesn’t seem to curl naturally as much anymore. With all of the heat and product I have used on my head you can imagine how much damage I have caused. There are so many products out there that actually dry out your hair and cause damage. When I was in high school and university I was using all of the wrong products. Here are some of the things I do now to learn from my mistakes.
Air Dry
Unless I am short for time, I always air dry my hair. When I air dry, before I start styling, I let it dry about 70%-80% of the way. Then I will go in with my blow dryer at medium heat and run my brush through it to smooth it all out. After showering I use a few products. I always use one pump of Moroccanoil and one pump of Kerastase Resistance Sérum Thérapiste. The Mococcanoil helps with frizz and any flyaways. The Kerastase serum helps with managing split ends. Blow drying your hair right after the shower can actually cause breakage. Your hair is more vulnerable when it’s wet. When you pull through it with a brush and heat, it tends to break more easily.
Brushes
This was something that never really crossed my mind until my hairdresser told me. If you don’t use the right hair brush it can actually rip your hair as you brush it. This causes thinning and split ends. I use Wet Brushes every morning and after the shower. West brushes bristles will glide through any hair type combing out tangles effortlessly. The bristles are flexible and allow for pain-free detangling.
Don’t Wash Every Day
When you wash your hair every day you don’t allow time for the natural oils in your scalp to seep into your hair. These natural oils, if left unwashed for a few days can make your hair look really greasy. In fact, these oils are really healthy for your hair follicles. Now, I’m not saying wash your hair once a week but try to wash it every other day or every two days. I am on a strict schedule of washing my hair every other day because I know it works for my hair type. People who wash their hair on a daily basis can expect their hair to become more dry and brittle faster.
Always Use Heat Protectant
If you are using any sort of heat on your hair for styling, make sure to always use a heat protectant. It doesn’t matter what type it is, as long as your using something to protect your hair that’s what’s important. We all know heat isn’t great but we all use it anyway. We like to style our hair in different ways and want it to look a certain way. As long as we are using the right products to help protect our hair from damage then we are doing ourselves a favour. One of my favourite hairstyles that does not require any heat and it super adorable is my easy go-to summer braid.
Remember, your hair is your most important accessory. Make sure you are taking care of it and treating it properly by using the right products and taking the right steps!
